Central Colombia
Every time I think I know Colombia, I travel to a different region and realize there’s always something more. This delightfully friendly country is nearly twice the size of Texas and with the Andes Mountains running through it the regional differences become even more distinct.
The province of Antioquia is no exception. The capital city of Medellín is a true gem. Located in the Aburrá Valley and surrounded by peaks over 10,000 feet high, this modern metropolis is known as ‘the city of eternal spring’ for its consistently comfortable year round climate. You’ll fall in love with the downtown neighborhoods filled with treelined streets and flanked by colorful building murals. Best of all, you can find exceptional food, drink and coffee simply by strolling a few blocks from pretty much anywhere. And the story of the city’s metamorphosis told by local residents who’ve been there for all of it will remind you what the human spirit is truly capable of.
And if you love coffee, the source of the finest premium Colombian beans are just a few hour’s drive away. The quaint provincial town of Jardín is the perfect place to really immerse yourself in the culture of this region which all revolves around their national cash crop. Surrounded by family farms between 3,000-7,000 feet, the town’s architecture is as inviting and warm as the people.
And then there’s Guatapé! The region’s favorite resort village where we’ll stay in a remote farmhouse retreat overlooking the lake - the perfect place to meditate, read, walk, trail run, or all of the above. Owner Angelina Ix-Ik Londoño Orozco wants you to have a truly culturally immersive experience with a private chef who prepares authentic Colombian meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The farm to table path can be measured in meters so prepare yourself to rediscover what real food tastes like!
