Big Bend National Park
If you’ve never been to Big Bend, you’re not alone. This is both one of the largest AND least visited national parks in the continental U.S. Why? Because it’s not exactly on the beaten path…and that’s just one of the advantages of spending some time here. Big Bend was designated as an International Dark Sky location in 2016 (one of the few in the U.S.) so the stargazing on a clear night is phenomenal. And Big Bend boasts two easily accessible canyons - Santa Elena and Boquillas - as well as the Chisos Mountains which have a hikeable 8,000 foot peak. There are even natural hot springs and, (if you’re lucky enough to spot one) javelinas and black bears.
But MY favorite part of a trip to Big Bend is experiencing the quiet vastness of the Sonoran desert and imagining the generations of Chisos, Mescalero Apaches, Comanches, Spaniards, Mexicans, and U.S. settlers who all called it home. No where else on earth has this combination of cultural history, scenery and solitude…and you’ll want to take in every bit of it.
